Buhari believed Aso Rock gossip that I planned to kill him – Aisha Buhari
The former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, revealed that her late husband, President Muhammadu Buhari, began to secure himself in his room due to rumors circulating within Aso Rock that she was plotting to harm him.

Aisha Buhari stated that the health issues which led to Buhari taking a 154-day medical leave in 2017 were initiated by an inadequate feeding schedule and poor dietary management.
She shared her insights on the health crisis in a recent biography titled “From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari,” written by Dr. Charles Omole, which was unveiled at the State House on December 15.
This book details Buhari’s journey from his early life in Daura, Katsina State, to his last moments in a hospital in London in mid-July 2025.
As noted in the biography, Aisha Buhari had consistently overseen her husband’s meals and supplements at designated times, a practice that she claimed supported “a slender man with a long history of malnutrition symptoms” in sustaining his vitality.
“Older bodies need careful and steady support,” she reminisced, adding, “He doesn’t suffer from a chronic condition. Just keep him on a schedule. ”
A passage in the book states: “As Aisha Buhari recounts, the health crisis her husband faced in 2017 was not due to an unexplained illness or a hidden scheme. It began, she explains, with the breakdown of a routine; ‘my nutrition,’ she refers to it, a systematic intake of meals and supplements she had previously managed in Kaduna prior to their relocation to Aso Villa. ”
The former First Lady convened a meeting with key staff members, which included physician Suhayb Rafindadi, CSO Bashir Abubakar, a housekeeper, and the SSS DG, to outline the strategy.
As narrated by Omole: “Every day, there were cups and bowls filled with customized vitamin powders and oils, a little protein here, a slight modification to cereals there. ”
“When the official machinery of the Presidency intruded into our personal lives, she clarified the plan: daily routines at certain times involved cups and bowls with custom vitamin powders and oils, a bit of protein, and occasional changes to cereals. Older bodies require careful and consistent care. ”
However, the system began to unravel.
“Then the rumors and the panic began. They claimed I intended to harm him,” the book cites her words.
“My husband believed these for about a week,” she disclosed, explaining that the President started to lock his room, altered small habits, and most importantly, “meals were postponed or overlooked; the supplements were halted. ”
“For a year, he missed lunch. His meals were poorly managed. ”
This decline led to Buhari making two extended medical trips to the United Kingdom, totaling 154 days in 2017, during which he transferred power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
After returning, he admitted that he had never been so unwell and that he had undergone blood transfusions.
