Italian parish mourns as Catholic priest commits suicide over transfer to another parish

In Italy, a 75-year-old Roman Catholic priest ended his life after it was disclosed that he would be reassigned from the parish he had dedicated nearly 25 years to.

On August 12, the remains of 75-year-old priest Lino Zatelli were discovered in Trento, Italy.

Just prior to his passing, he had been made aware of his upcoming transfer from the parish where he had spent almost 25 years, according to reports from Tribune Chrétienne.

On that morning, Zatelli was scheduled to conduct Mass at the Church of San Carlo Borromeo; however, he failed to show up for the service. The sacristan subsequently visited his residence and found him deceased.

Not long before this heartbreaking event, Zatelli received notification that, due to a reorganization within the diocese, he was to vacate the parish to which he had committed nearly 25 years.

The priest was profoundly troubled by this decision and expressed to his congregation, “I never requested to leave. ”

A campaign was even initiated to advocate for his continued presence at San Carlo, resulting in a petition that garnered several hundred signatures.

This heartbreaking incident also highlights the issues of loneliness and distress faced by aging priests, not only in Italy but in France as well.

Catholic writers observe that for a pastor, departing from a parish after many years signifies more than just a shift in duties; it represents a severance from a community that had become akin to family and his main network of social connections.

Additionally, the authors of the publication stress that it is not possible to conclusively attribute the cause of the suicide directly to the transfer decision.

Nonetheless, this unfortunate event has again brought focus to the concerns surrounding isolation, emotional fatigue, and insufficient support among clergy in the Catholic Church.
