“The question broke me” – Woman recounts why she ended her mother’s Omugwo after two weeks
A woman from Nigeria has recounted her journey with Omugwo, explaining her decision to prevent her mother from living with her after the birth of her second child.

In a video posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), the mother of four expressed her belief that Omugwo is overrated, noting that she still needed to complete many household tasks despite having just come home from the hospital.
“This Omugwo thing is really overrated. I told my mom not to come to my place when I had my second child. I have four kids, and there was a comment she made that made me change my mind,” she remarked.
She clarified that, even while her mother was around, she still had to take care of cooking, cleaning, bathing herself, and other tasks, while her mother primarily focused on the baby.
She shared that the situation escalated one morning when there was nothing to eat, and she intentionally pretended she was too weak to make breakfast.
“That morning, there was no food, and I didn’t want to cook at all. I thought my mom would say, ‘What do you have here so I can help with breakfast or something? ’
But do you know the first thing she asked me? She said, ‘Is she the one preparing the food for me and my husband? ’” she recalled.

This question affected her deeply, leading her to terminate the Omugwo arrangement after only two weeks, providing her mother with fare to go back home.
Her story has sparked conversations regarding the actual experiences of Omugwo and the support new mothers generally look for from relatives during their recovery period.
